A new approach to postnatal care has been introduced on Samson Ward. Women and birthing people can now bring and self-administer their own pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, after giving birth.
This also includes medications prescribed prior to admission, such as blood pressure tablets.
Why this change?
Feedback has shown that many women and birthing people wish to take more responsibility for managing their own pain relief and regular medications after giving birth. This change supports that autonomy while maintaining safety through clear guidelines.
Key guidelines for self-administration
- Medications must be declared to the midwife on duty so they can be recorded in health care records.
- Individuals are responsible for noting the time and dosage of any self-administered medication and informing their midwife as soon as possible for documentation.
- All self-administered medication must be stored in the locked section of the bedside locker. Locker codes are provided on admission.
- Upon discharge, individuals must take all personal medications with them. Any left behind will be disposed of.
